Accelerated capital allowances: An overview
ACA is based on the existing capital allowances tax structure or wear and tear allowance, for plants and machinery. Claiming the ACA is carried out the same way as for the standard capital allowances.
Organisations who invest in eligible energy-efficient capital equipment can deduct the full cost of the equipment from their profits in the year of purchase. This reduces the taxable profit in year one by the full cost of the equipment
Research & Development Tax Credit
Ireland’s R&D tax credit system is ofmajor benefit to both multinational companies and SMEs operating in Ireland. The R&D tax credit was first introduced in Finance Act 2004 and offers a company undertaking R&D in Ireland a significant tax break, representing a potential 25% refund of costs incurred. This expenditure is also allowable as a Corporation Tax deduction, giving an effective deduction of 37.5% in a company’s tax liability
Complexity and Expressivity of Branching- and Alternating-Time Temporal Logics with Finitely Many Variables
We show that Branching-time temporal logics CTL and CTL*, as well as
Alternating-time temporal logics ATL and ATL*, are as semantically expressive
in the language with a single propositional variable as they are in the full
language, i.e., with an unlimited supply of propositional variables. It follows
that satisfiability for CTL, as well as for ATL, with a single variable is
EXPTIME-complete, while satisfiability for CTL*, as well as for ATL*, with a
single variable is 2EXPTIME-complete,--i.e., for these logics, the
satisfiability for formulas with only one variable is as hard as satisfiability
for arbitrary formulas.Comment: Prefinal version of the published pape
Membranes by the Numbers
Many of the most important processes in cells take place on and across
membranes. With the rise of an impressive array of powerful quantitative
methods for characterizing these membranes, it is an opportune time to reflect
on the structure and function of membranes from the point of view of biological
numeracy. To that end, in this article, I review the quantitative parameters
that characterize the mechanical, electrical and transport properties of
membranes and carry out a number of corresponding order of magnitude estimates
that help us understand the values of those parameters.Comment: 27 pages, 12 figure
The Role of Alpha 6 Integrin in Prostate Cancer Migration and Bone Pain in a Novel Xenograft Model
Of the estimated 565,650 people in the U.S. who will die of cancer in 2008, almost all will have metastasis. Breast, prostate, kidney, thyroid and lung cancers metastasize to the bone. Tumor cells reside within the bone using integrin type cell adhesion receptors and elicit incapacitating bone pain and fractures. In particular, metastatic human prostate tumors express and cleave the integrin A6, a receptor for extracellular matrix components of the bone, i.e., laminin 332 and laminin 511. More than 50% of all prostate cancer patients develop severe bone pain during their remaining lifetime. One major goal is to prevent or delay cancer induced bone pain. We used a novel xenograft mouse model to directly determine if bone pain could be prevented by blocking the known cleavage of the A6 integrin adhesion receptor. Human tumor cells expressing either the wildtype or mutated A6 integrin were placed within the living bone matrix and 21 days later, integrin expression was confirmed by RT-PCR, radiographs were collected and behavioral measurements of spontaneous and evoked pain performed. All animals independent of integrin status had indistinguishable tumor burden and developed bone loss 21 days after surgery. A comparison of animals containing the wild type or mutated integrin revealed that tumor cells expressing the mutated integrin resulted in a dramatic decrease in bone loss, unicortical or bicortical fractures and a decrease in the ability of tumor cells to reach the epiphyseal plate of the bone. Further, tumor cells within the bone expressing the integrin mutation prevented cancer induced spontaneous flinching, tactile allodynia, and movement evoked pain. Preventing A6 integrin cleavage on the prostate tumor cell surface decreased the migration of tumor cells within the bone and the onset and degree of bone pain and fractures. These results suggest that strategies for blocking the cleavage of the adhesion receptors on the tumor cell surface can significantly prevent cancer induced bone pain and slow disease progression within the bone. Since integrin cleavage is mediated by Urokinase-type Plasminogen Activator (uPA), further work is warranted to test the efficacy of uPA inhibitors for prevention or delay of cancer induced bone pain
Pre-diagnosis diet and survival after a diagnosis of ovarian cancer
BACKGROUND: The relationship between diet and survival after ovarian cancer diagnosis is unclear as a result of a limited number of studies and inconsistent findings. METHODS: We examined the association between pre-diagnostic diet and overall survival in a population-based cohort (n=811) of Australian women diagnosed with invasive epithelial ovarian cancer between 2002 and 2005. Diet was measured by validated food frequency questionnaire. Deaths were ascertained up to 31 August 2014 via medical record review and Australian National Death Index linkage. We conducted Cox proportional hazards regression analysis, controlling for diagnosis age, tumour stage, grade and subtype, residual disease, smoking status, body mass index, physical activity, marital status, and energy intake. RESULTS: We observed improved survival with highest compared with lowest quartile of fibre intake (hazard ratio (HR)=0.69, 95% CI: 0.53-0.90, P-trend=0.002). There was a suggestion of better survival for women with highest compared with lowest intake category of green leafy vegetables (HR=0.79, 95% CI: 0.62-0.99), fish (HR=0.74, 95% CI: 0.57-0.95), poly- to mono-unsaturated fat ratio (HR=0.76, 95% CI: 0.59-0.98), and worse survival with higher glycaemic index (HR=1.28, 95% CI: 1.01-1.65, P-trend=0.03). CONCLUSIONS: The associations we observed between healthy components of diet pre-diagnosis and ovarian cancer survival raise the possibility that dietary choices after diagnosis may improve survival
Search for new phenomena in final states with an energetic jet and large missing transverse momentum in pp collisions at √ s = 8 TeV with the ATLAS detector
Results of a search for new phenomena in final states with an energetic jet and large missing transverse momentum are reported. The search uses 20.3 fb−1 of √ s = 8 TeV data collected in 2012 with the ATLAS detector at the LHC. Events are required to have at least one jet with pT > 120 GeV and no leptons. Nine signal regions are considered with increasing missing transverse momentum requirements between Emiss T > 150 GeV and Emiss T > 700 GeV. Good agreement is observed between the number of events in data and Standard Model expectations. The results are translated into exclusion limits on models with either large extra spatial dimensions, pair production of weakly interacting dark matter candidates, or production of very light gravitinos in a gauge-mediated supersymmetric model. In addition, limits on the production of an invisibly decaying Higgs-like boson leading to similar topologies in the final state are presente
Search for chargino-neutralino production with mass splittings near the electroweak scale in three-lepton final states in √s=13 TeV pp collisions with the ATLAS detector
A search for supersymmetry through the pair production of electroweakinos with mass splittings near the electroweak scale and decaying via on-shell W and Z bosons is presented for a three-lepton final state. The analyzed proton-proton collision data taken at a center-of-mass energy of √s=13 TeV were collected between 2015 and 2018 by the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 139 fb−1. A search, emulating the recursive jigsaw reconstruction technique with easily reproducible laboratory-frame variables, is performed. The two excesses observed in the 2015–2016 data recursive jigsaw analysis in the low-mass three-lepton phase space are reproduced. Results with the full data set are in agreement with the Standard Model expectations. They are interpreted to set exclusion limits at the 95% confidence level on simplified models of chargino-neutralino pair production for masses up to 345 GeV
Continuance Use Intention of a Gamified Programming Learning System
Published ArticleThe gamification of education offers various advantages
including increased engagement of students. Limited research is currently
available that can shed light on the influence of various gamification elements
in on-line learning environments on the engagement and continuance
use intention of students. The objective of the study was therefore
to investigate the influence of gamification elements in on-line learning
environments on the engagement of students and consequently on the
continuance use intention of students. The population of the study consisted
of 192 second-year Information Technology students enrolled at the
Central University of Technology (Free State). An on-line questionnaire
was used to collect data from students. The results indicated that the
rewards that students received, as well as their self-expression and status
in a gamified programming learning environment are very important to
enhance their engagement in these environments. Furthermore, the study
revealed that meaningful experiences in on-line learning environments is
the leading predictor of continuance use intention of students in gamified
programming learning environments. The results of this study could
assist instructors in information technology departments of higher education
institutions to incorporate gamified programming learning environments
into their learning offerings
